Last week a group of 11 lovley ladies from a local public school threw a private suprise wine tasting / farewell fete for their principal who was leaving. We created a special 3 course meal accompanied by 4 different wines to taste for $45 a person. They raved about what an amazing time they had and what a memeorable night it was. Here is what was on the menu and a little history about it. . .
**We started off with a Prosecco wine and plates of Bruschette. Prosecco wine is an apertivo and most Italians kick off any event or appetizer with this sparkling white wine. It is from the Veneto region and is similar to champagne with the exception that Prosecco is made using one grape as opposed to 3 and is fermented in a tank instead of a bottle. It was paired with a delicious traditional tomato bruschette made by Mama Rosa , which is a specialty of southern Italy.
**The second course was a delicious Frascati wine and a plate of our famous Gnocchi alla Romana. Frascati is a small town outside of Rome. Most Romans travel there to feast on porchetta and wash it down with a nice glass of Frascati. This wine is not exported often since Romans like to drink so much of it. Made with tribbiano and malvasia grapes, it is a wonderful summer wine. We paired it with the gnocchi sincde they are both roman specialties. Our gnochi is made with sage , butter, parmesan cheese and semolina instead of potato which makes them lighter and fluffier like little cuscinetti (pillows) for your mouth.
** Our last Course was a Nero D'avola wine paired with a delicious stuffed portobello mushroom. Nero D'Avola is a spicy and peppery wine from Sicily. It goes down so nice and smooth. It is very similar to a shiraz which is from Australia. The Sicilians taught the Australians the art of wine making because the climate was so silimar to Sicily's. It is usually paired with hearty full bodied food such as cheese or grilled veggies. The portobello was a perfect match, stuffed with breadcrumbs, sausage, herbs , spices and parmesan cheese , oven roasted and drizzeled with a balsamic vinegar reduction.
**Our last wine was a San Giovese Wine. San Giovese literally means "The blood of Jupiter" . The San Giovese grape is one of Italy's "noble grapes" the other two bieng the nebbiloi and aglianico grapes. This paticular grape is traditopnally grown in Tuscany and is used in making Chianti &Chianti Classico wines.
